Riot Games announced today that League of Legends, their action real-time strategy game for the PC, has more than doubled its registered user base in the last four months to hit 32.5 million registered users. There are 11.5 million monthly active players, with a peak concurrency of 1.3 million players.
League of Legends: Season Two is about to begin, which will feature an unprecedented prize pool of $5 million, which Riot says is the largest in eSports history. The season will culminate in a global tournament with $2 million in prizes, where the winner will be proclaimed the best LoL team in the world.
“The incredible passion and dedication of our players is positively inspiring,” said Brandon Beck, co-founder and CEO of Riot Games. “Our community’s boundless enthusiasm is why they are central to every decision we make at Riot.”
Last month marked only the second anniversary of the game, which has been growing very rapidly. The user base compares quite favorably to World of Warcraft, with 10.3 million subscribers. “It’s staggering to think about the fact that over a billion games of League of Legends have been played since launch,” said Marc Merrill, co-founder and President of Riot Games. “In 2012, we intend to deliver even more for our growing audience.” The infographic below provides some more stats about the game.
