E3: Kinect to Directly Challenge Wii Fitness

Posted June 14, 2010 by Ben Strauss

The Microsoft Press Event was a major showcase for the new Kinect controller, and one of the larger aspects of the augmented reality functionality will be in fitness. THQ and Ubisoft will both be releasing games specifically related to the Kinect, The Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout and Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, respectively.

“When Kinect for Xbox 360 was first unveiled, we recognized the unique opportunity it presented for us to bring an entirely new level of activity and unprecedented way of gaming to players,” said Martin Good, Executive Vice President of THQ’s Kids, Family, Casual Games, and Global Online Services. “The Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout will fully leverage Kinect for Xbox 360s technology with elements that will immerse players into the gameplay experience, while introducing a fun, new approach to health and fitness video games.”

While THQ is focusing on branding with a popular reality TV show, Ubisoft has already unveiled its own fitness game at the Press Conference earlier today. “Ubisoft’s Your Shape: Fitness Evolved leverages the interactivity of Kinect for Xbox 360 to revolutionize fitness gaming,” said Felicia Williams, international brand manager at Ubisoft. “Your Shape: Fitness Evolved is so precise, fun and interactive that players won’t even realize that they are getting a great workout while playing our game.”

Wii Sports and Wii Fit continue to be huger sellers on the Wii, but with the introduction of two Kinect games from some of the top developers in the world, it represents a growing challenge for Nintendo to stem the tide of reduced sales.

The Kinect is to be released on November 4, with both of the fitness titles confirmed as launch titles.

"Kinect to Directly Challenge Wii Fitness"

"...where they will fail because everyone being targeted by those games has already bought a Wii", is the end to that headline.
