Kinect Lag Problems Do Not Worry Rare

Rare has been a staunch supporter of the Kinect for some time now, and with statements made to Eurogamer, they still see the Kinect as a great system to work with. “Lag is not an issue,” says Rare’s executive producer of technology and communications, Richard Burton.

"As with any prototype stuff, of course it was in the past. That's to be expected. Where we're at now, not at all. Yes, we've done a lot work to make sure it wasn't a problem, but when you've got something that's copying what you're doing you can't have a lot of lag," he went on to say.

Though the Kinect is a device that Rare supports, it will not be going all the way to social titles. “There's so much more data, so much more fidelity, so many more things you can do," he said. "Kinect's not just about tracking - there's voice recognition, identity, so many things. It's more than the sum of its parts."

Rare recently celebrated its 25th anniversary this summer with a new look. The developer has had successful games in Viva Piñata and Banjo Kazooie as of late, and will be working on the Kinect in the near future.

As lag issues have been brought up, Digital Foundry was able to measure the speed close to the officially-quoted 150 millisecond response time, though they stated that the 360’s video signal to the television does add some time, the response is still “very close to 1:1 tracking.” That said, several analysts believe that lag will still affect the sales of Kinect, enough to make it “fall flat on its face.”

The Kinect has yet to see pricing information, but Microsoft remains confident that the motion controller will appeal to a large number of gamers.

The truly great thing about Kinect is, it can have as many software updates as they can get out.

Over the years they will constantly work on getting it closer and closer to perfect 1:1 accuracy.

Now obviously we want that at launch, but it isn't possible. As long as the lag isn't noticable and infringes on the gameplay, that's good enough for me and it'll most certainly be good enough for it's taget audience.
