Killzone 3 in addition to embracing stereoscopic 3D is also one of the few shooters to have PlayStation Move support. In fact, that game is being released with a Killzone-branded gun peripheral for the Move called the Sharp Shooter. Guerilla’s principal programmer, Tommy de Roos, told Destructoid that he expects this to be the beginning of a growing trend.
"You lose some of the accuracy when rotating, that becomes more difficult," said de Roos. "But you make up for that by being able to point anywhere on the screen and send your bullets flying there. So it's a trade-off and a lot of hardcore gamers are seeing that and actually some of them are starting to prefer playing with the Move.
"These are just the initial stages. Nintendo did a lot of research there, we did some research there now and it's slowly progressing. I think, as this develops, in a few years most of the first-person-shooters will be played like this. I really think so. Maybe not the Move specifically but a pointing controller like this."
In an interview with Ars Technica, de Roos detailed Guerilla’s early experiments with the Move, including a failed Move-enabled port of Killzone 2.
"One of the first ideas was to create an on-rails version of Killzone 2," he said. "But once we realized how much work that would be, since all encounters would have to be re-scripted, we decided against it."
"Throwing a grenade using a throw gesture was really cool. Losing your aim and turning your back towards the enemy with a cooked grenade in your hand was less appreciated. So in the end, the only gestures that survived were the ones that felt natural and did not interfere with your aim,” he added, referencing gesture-based controls for Killzone 3.
Killzone 3 will be hitting stores on February 22, though a single player demo will be released on February 15. Anyone ready with their PlayStation Move and 3DTV?
