iPhone Games Have Doubled Since March

Posted July 7, 2009 by James Brightman

With the launch of the iPhone 3GS, iPhone gaming remains hotter than ever. You may recall that back in March of this year, there were over 6,000 games on the App Store. In just a few short months, that figure has more than doubled to over 13,000, according to data tracked by Mobclix. Although there are thousands of free games to play, the vast majority (over 9,500) are still paid downloads.

The biggest genre by far is puzzle games (16.4%), and that's followed by action and arcade (both at 11.2%). Gameloft's Hero of Sparta, which released last December, is the top paid download on the App Store (check out the top 100 here) while iHandgun, released this May, is the top free download (full list here).

The growth rate for games on iPhone has been pretty incredible. At this pace, we wouldn't be surprised to see somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 games on the App Store by the end of the year.
