The new iPhone 4 was just announced at WWDC. From a gaming perspective, perhaps what's most interesting about the device is its new motion-sensing capabilities. The iPhone has always felt side-to-side or up/down movements thanks to its accelerometer, but now the iPhone 4 combines a 3-axis gyroscope with the accelerometer and GPS functionality to offer full 6-axis motion.

Apple's Steve Jobs took the stage to demonstrate this new functionality, by tilting, rotating and eventually knocking over a tower of blocks. "We've tied the gyro, accelerometer, and GPS for 6-axis motion sensing. It's perfect for gaming - and one of the reasons it's perfect is because it's built into every iPhone 4, so you know it's there," he said. [Thanks gdgt]

With both Microsoft and Sony putting the spotlight on motion gaming at next week's E3, it's quite interesting to see Apple grabbing the spotlight a week earlier with full motion gaming on a portable device. We're very curious to see what developers do with this technology.
