App Store developers seem to be somewhat excited about the new Apple iPad, but Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is not at all impressed. Speaking to the Associated Press, Iwata dismissed the iPad as simply being a "bigger iPod Touch." He added, ''There were no surprises for me." Analyst Michael Pachter recently told us that he thinks the introduction of the iPad could benefit the iPod Touch while hurting sales of the Nintendo DS.
Iwata also addressed the continued speculation about a new motion-sensing DS and the much rumored Wii HD. The Nintendo boss acknowledged that his company is working on new machines (they always are, after all), but he questioned how much the added motion for DS or HD video for Wii would help sales. ''I question whether those features would be enough to get people to buy new machines,'' he said.
Finally, Iwata was also asked about the 3D stereoscopic trend, which has seen much more hype of late thanks to Avatar. While Sony is making a big 3D push, Microsoft doesn't seem as interested, and Nintendo seems not at all interested. "I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?'' Iwata commented. [Funny that he should worry what people look like suddenly when people are flailing around with Wii - Ed.] Iwata added that Nintendo would also have to examine the health effects of longtime 3D game playing, since game sessions could obviously last longer than a two-hour film.

Someone needs to get Iwata an HDTV with some HD adoption rates stapled to the screen. Get moving.

Haha. Yeah, it's typical Nintendo though. Just a few weeks before the Wii price cut he was still denying it. I think we'll see a Wii HD in the near future.

If a Peter Moore or Robbie Bach said this nonsense, the gaming media would crucify them as idiots.

iPad needs killer apps when it comes to games. I won't spend $500 just to play Canabalt on a bigger screen.

Overall, the ipad does not look like it can be a "game changer machine". In my opinion, the ipad is a glorified ipod touch with a bigger screen, and there is no way it closes the gap between netbooks and smartphones, as Apple's boss claims. Game-wise, I agree with Buffdaily247. Who would spend $500 just to play iphone/ipod touch type games on a bigger screen?

I think the iPad's appeal in the market won't precisely the same as the iPhone or iPod Touch - it'll be a fancy e-reader to some, a tablet computer to others and a portable TV to those interested. I'm not sure it'll be much of a "replacement" for anything as it does energize a new catergory.
Also Iwata surely noted that the camera, download service and "i" in the DSi were completely different from Apple and not inspired by anything ever and if you say otherwise you're an idiot. :p
