Infamous 2 Lead Character Retains Original Look Following Fan Backlash

Posted July 23, 2010 by Ben Strauss

Overwhelming negative reaction to a redesigned Cole from Infamous 2 has led Developer Sucker Punch to revert to the original character design, rather than implement the new character design.

InFamous 2 was originally revealed on GameInformer and showcased at E3 earlier this year. The early build showed that the lead character was changed in a way that eventually proved to alienate fans of the game. Gone were the shaved head and yellow biker jacket; in their place was a brown haired man with scruff, walking around with a single strap backpack and even several tattoos.

Sucker Punch confirmed before their comic-con panel that they had indeed changed Cole’s look back towards something that greatly resembles his original look from the first title. Images of the new character have not been released, but IGN states that the character is looking “more like the person we played as in the original InFamous.”

In a 1UP interview with InFamous 2 game designer Nate Fox back at E3, it was revealed that the character would be getting a redesign. Interestingly enough, Fox was rather apologetic about the redesign, even reinforcing the notion that the new design would be scrapped if consumers didn’t take kindly to it. Consumer opinion won out it seems, even to the expectations of the design team. It makes one wonder why a team would go through the trouble of developing a new character design that wasn’t exactly welcomed by even the team itself.

Smart move. What numbskull at SP thought it was a good idea to completely makeover an already established lead character? At least they wised up in the end.

@DanielTyler2009, I would gather that we should look to the marketing department for such answers. They usually like to spin fairy tales better than any game designer. ;P
