Earlier this month, it was revealed that IGN might split off from parent company News Corp. into its own entity after purchasing UGO. Now anonymous sources have told MCV that IGN is looking to sell Direct2Drive, the company’s digital distribution service. The possible buyer? Video game rental-by-mail service GameFly.
GameFly is currently physical rentals only, but Direct2Drive recently launched a digital rental service for PC. This could be the first step to providing something akin to Netflix Streaming. Steam is still the digital distribution king, but could Direct2Drive and GameFly take the crown?
IGN has yet to officially confirm the possible sale.
