id Software Not Planning to Develop New IP for Another 10 Years

Posted August 12, 2010 by Ben Strauss

Legendary programmer John Carmack, speaking to the Official PlayStation Magazine, says that id Software is unlikely to develop any new IP within “the next decade.” Instead, resources will be used to focus on supporting popular and existing IP already out from the developer.

"We do already have more IPs than we can exploit," he told OPM. "I doubt we're going to do another IP. It's scary to say it, but maybe not in the next decade even, because we want to support Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake - and hopefully we can add Rage onto that - and I don't want five teams here. Three is scary enough.

"Obviously if Rage is a success then we'll want to do a Rage 2," he added. "If people love it, you want to give them more of it."

Carmack is due to speak at the annual QuakeCon event where he has promised to reveal “something neat and unannounced.” The likelihood of the announcement revealing a new IP has simply gone out the window.

My first thoughts are that is Sad and lame but i'll bench those thoughts for now and ask a simple question. What other IP's do they have besides Rage, Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake and what will be their development cycle? One game every two years? If they're struggling then that kind of makes sense to make one game for each franchise but I don't have to like it. The Industry has already gone sequel crazy and yet there are still ignore IP's that at least deserve one release or a chance to be reinvented. Even if it does fail.

id has tapped outside studios (usually Raven) to do sequels like Quake IV and Wolfenstein, and now that they're owned by Zenimax they want to get away from that and do it internally. Between those four franchises, and id's stated desire to stay small and do things internally, they could probably just pump out sequels for a while.

This could be good news if they actually release a game every 2-2.5 years. Can still make many Doom games as long as its not like Doom 3 but more of a Dead Space FPS style with real gore, spooky and kool looking monsters, I'd love to see all of the original classic doom monsters be done in next-gen graphics. I am incredibly excited about Rage, the game should sell well, and be nice to see sequels. Wolfenstein... meh, I loved 3D as a kid. Quake always had potential, hopefully if they make another they do it right unlike Quake 4.
