Update: We've now received the official press announcement, which clarifies that the $200 million sales figure is for just the U.S. and Europe. Unit sales still have not been provided, but the $200 million likely indicates around 3 million or so units, depending on the breakdown of sales between the different editions, some of which are sold at much higher prices.
“Halo: Reach is the biggest game Microsoft has ever released, and its launch has already surpassed every game, movie and entertainment launch this year,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. “Every major installment has grown in scope and popularity, firmly cementing the Halo franchise as one of the most popular entertainment properties in the world over the past decade.”
Original story:
Microsoft's Tokyo Game Show conference is well under way, and VP of Microsoft Games Studios Phil Spencer has revealed that Bungie’s Halo: Reach has hit over $200 million in day one sales.
This figure would put Halo: Reach as the top entertainment launch of the year thus far.
Halo: Reach has already surpassed Halo 3 in terms of concurrent players online, but now Halo: Reach has certainly beaten its predecessor in sales. Halo 3 was able to top sales of $170 million on day one, but Reach is already proving to be a record breaker on multiple fronts. That said, it still doesn't top Activision's day one sales for Modern Warfare 2, which pumped out $310 million in its first 24 hours.

Was Modern warfare 2 on two platforms or three(PC)? At any rate, it looks like Reach would have had about $400 million if it was on at least two platforms. I wonder how much it will increase system sales. At any rate it is suppose to have Kinect abilities in it, it may even help sale Kinect sales.

I'm sure Bungie is counting on the idea of them making a lot more money on multiple platforms. And I have no doubt that Halo: Reach would sell more if it was on PS3 as well, but there's a lot of factors that are difficult to account for. How many PS3 owners have an Xbox 360 already? Would Xbox 360 owners be as enthusiastic about Halo: Reach if it wasn't an exclusive? We'll never know, of course.
