Vulture, NY Mag’s entertainment column, is reporting that Dreamworks is looking into reviving the Halo movie project. The movie has been in development hell since 2006, with Microsoft saying the project was ‘on hold’ last year. Halo: Reach is selling well, so the brand is high again, but can Dreamworks succeed where Fox and Universal failed?
Dreamworks is reportedly focusing on using the novelizations for the games, Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: The Flood, Halo: First Strike, Halo: Ghosts of Onyx and Halo: Contact Harvest. This would allow the studio to possibly avoid the legal landmines that now surround the property due to the years of failed development. Fox and Universal sunk $12 million into the failed project’s pre-production, and Dreamworks does not want to be on the hook for those costs.
Microsoft has been waiting for the perfect time before committing to a Halo movie, acknowledging that a successful movie could boost the brand, but a poor one could have the reverse effect. This is also not the first time that Spielberg has been linked to a possible Halo film. Perhaps this time it will pan out.
