Most expected that Halo 3: ODST would be one of the hottest items this holiday and some quantitative news has come out to confirm that the Halo franchise is still a hot item. USA Today is reporting that Halo 3: ODST has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide, generating over $125 million in sales.
The article goes on to explain that Microsoft, Bungie and 343 Industries have big plans for the franchise down the road. Along with a prequel game in Halo: Reach, there will also be two comic series (Halo: Helljumper, Halo: Blood Line) and a series of anime shorts titled Halo Legends being previewed on the Halo Waypoint channel for Xbox Live. There are also a collection of stories planed for Halo: Evolutions and a new book trilogy from Greg Bear, along with a sixth line of Halo action figures from McFarlane Toys.
343 Industries creative director Frank O'Connor hinted that there will be future adventures for Master Chief and not just prequels. "We do have a plan that goes out at least six years," said O'Connor. "Eventually, it will become very apparent that there is a plan for the way the canon all ties together and the way the comic books and the novels all tie together."
Personally, we've long thought that the plot of the Halo was one of the more derivative and overrated parts of the series, but we acknowledge that it is also one of the most influential shooter series ever in its game design.
