Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock Sells Just 86,000

Posted October 15, 2010 by M.H. Williams

Activision's newest installment in the Guitar Hero franchise, Warriors of Rock, wasn't even in top 10 on NPD's Software Sales chart released yesterday. While the title wasn't available for retail until the end of September, Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz (via CVG) says the title sold only 86,000 copies in five days.

That's a precipitous drop from the days of Guitar Hero III being the second best-selling game of all time with more than $1 billion in lifetime revenue or Guitar Hero 5 selling just under 500,000 copies in one month.

The music genre has been in decline for some time. Sales in the U.S. have been down 69% this year (and down almost $350 million in absolute dollars), as analyst Michael Pachter noted. This latest Guitar Hero doesn't seem to alleviate concerns about the brand or music genre, but we'll see if it picks up this holiday season.

Personally, I gave up on Guitar Hero around 3 or 4, but I am anxiously awaiting the release of Rock Band 3. It's going to be so surreal to fail Easy songs with the Pro Mode controller.
