Guitar Hero Subscription Service 'One of the Things We Would Love to Do' says RedOctane

DJ Hero underperformed in its first week, netting about 122,000 in sales over five days. Despite these early returns, RedOctane founder Kai Huang has high expectations for the Guitar Hero spin off.

“We're planning for it to be the No. 1 new [intellectual property] of the year,” said Huang to The Seattle Times. “So, yeah, we're excited about it.”

Huang’s ambitions go beyond just more properties; he was very receptive to a question about a music service with a monthly subscription fee. “That's definitely one of the things we would love to do,” responded Huang when asked about a Guitar Hero subscription service. “There are a lot of issues around music licensing. Consumers want it; I know I want it. We're trying to make that happen.”

It wouldn’t surprise us if somewhere down the road, games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band weren’t mostly based around opt-in DLC and subscription fees, but that's probably not for several more years.
