The music category in 2009 had been tracking down about 50% but bounced back nicely in September with the launches of Guitar Hero 5 and The Beatles Rock Band. Although Beatles did manage to outsell Guitar Hero 5 for the month, there is actually pretty strong overlap between the two titles, according to a new report from DFC Intelligence.
DFC examined the usage of over 10,000 users for both The Beatles Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 among Xbox 360 users on GamerDNA. Ultimately, DFC found that 45% of Guitar Hero 5 users also played The Beatles Rock Band and 34% of The Beatles Rock Band users also played Guitar Hero 5. DFC analyst Jeremy Miller commented, "This high cross play figure indicates significant interest in music games in general among a large portion of the user base."
DFC also monitored brand loyalty between the two franchises and found that 24% of Guitar Hero World Tour users also played Guitar Hero 5 in its first month of release. Furthermore, 21% of Guitar Hero World Tour users also played The Beatles Rock Band. Looking at Rock Band 2 users, 26% played The Beatles Rock Band in its first month of release, while 19% played Guitar Hero 5. "Considering that this was only the first month of release for the products this is a surprisingly high overlap, that suggests strong loyalty to the concept of music games in general," noted Miller.
The bottom line is that people still seem to very much enjoy the music genre, and it continues to attract new users to the space, especially The Beatles Rock Band. DFC said that worldwide, 64% of The Beatles Rock Band users had not played Guitar Hero World Tour or Rock Band 2. On the other hand, just 46% of Guitar Hero 5 users had not played Guitar Hero World Tour or Rock Band 2.

The music genre is here to stay.
What I'll also be interested in is the percentage of Guitar Hero and Rock Band users that have played DJ Hero.

Good point. I will say DJ Hero did a good job so far grabbing the spotlight during the World Series as a sponsor and the commercial is on pretty frequently with Eminem and Jay Z. I've personally been enjoying DJ Hero, lots of fun, and I'm not even into rap/hip-hop much these days, but the game is a blast.

Alex that's definitely worthy of exploration. DJ Hero is still very new but I am curious about that as well. Stay tuned.

I'll be getting DJ Hero (hopefully) this Christmas!!
Thanks for the support that the question deserves some exploration!
I'll certainly stay tuned to this site to see if there's any reports on the matter, because I'm very curious. My flatmate who brought the Xbox down loves playing Guitar Hero and he has made it clear he doesn't want DJ Hero anywhere near his Xbox, which is the only one in the house.
I'd like to know, through the percentage of users that have made the transition or have at least tried DJ Hero, if others think the same way or along similiar lines. Also on the percentage of users who haven't experienced a Guitar Hero or Rock Band game that have decided to step into the genre following DJ Hero.
It would certainly be very interesting numbers.
