After being delayed numerous times, Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5 finally made it out on time for this past holiday season, and Sony proudly announced that the game had already shipped 5.5 million units worldwide (1.25 million of those were shipped to North America). Having hit U.S. store shelves on November 24, the racer placed only eighth on the November top 10 NPD chart.
As Sony's primary 'AAA' PS3 title for the holiday season, the hope was that GT5 would accelerate in December, but the title didn't make the top 10. NPD has revealed to IndustryGamers that it sold 560.5K units in December. That's not terrible, but it's certainly less than what you'd expect for a heralded franchise like Gran Turismo.
The one thing we'd point out, however, is that like many Wii titles, Gran Turismo is one of those "evergreen" games that will no doubt be picked up by more PS3 owners as the installed base grows. So GT5 will eventually put up some very solid numbers.

Ya right GT has never been evergreen! This game is a huge flop here in the US. Once you come out ,and say it the better we all will be.

Good sales for GT5. That means around 1m in USA for Nov-Dec. 0.2m in Canada perhaps and around 1.5m total for entire North America.
@theWon ..GT5 sold 5.5m copies worldwide in just 12 days after its release. SONY cares about Worldwide Sales and thats all that matters. LTD GT5 will easily outsell any x360 game based on worldwide sales . Also Forza3 couldnt even hit 200k in USA if you are unaware. Forza3 sold just 165000 copies in October , 2009 and never appeared anywhere on the US chart after that.
GT5 sold 750,000 copies in UK alone and around 6m there by now i guess. We will wait for SONY's numbers this 29th of January , 2011

@Abdul, it was originally planned for March, then early November, and then late November. And no, it shipped 5.5M. The sold Sony uses = sold-in. Sold-in means sold to retailers, aka shipped. Have a nice day.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit continues to stay ahead. I, for one, am happy.

That's higher than I would have expected. It'll make a big impact in Europe and it will have a "long tail" and continue selling well in the months to come.
