Gamers anxiously awaited the release of Polyphony Digital's newest Gran Turismo game, and with the title having finally shipped in late November, it's already posting very solid numbers. Sony announced today that GT5 sold-in 5.5 million units worldwide, while the franchise as a whole has now sold-in 60 million across the globe since the series debuted back in 1997.
GT5 stands out as Sony's only major video game release this holiday season (apart from the Move controller itself). It's the ninth iteration in the heralded racing franchise and features a new physics engine, 1,000 licensed karts and cars from the world's top manufacturers, stereoscopic 3D support, real-time car damage, dynamic weather effects, kart racing, a Course Maker, and 16-player online racing over PSN.
Sony also plans to further expand the franchise, noting its plans with this vague statement: "For all Gran Turismo fans around the world, SCEI and the developer of the Gran Turismo series, Polyphony Digital Inc., will continue hereon to vigorously promote development of the Gran Turismo series, which can be expected to evolve even further through the PS3 platform and broadband network environment."
