A new job posting on Gamasutra’s job board lists the need for a Senior Online Programmer for one of Sony's most popular franchises. Sony’s Santa Monica studio, responsible for the God of War series, is looking for someone with online development experience.
God of War has historically been a single player game, but the listing is rather specific, asking for experience with "in-game communication, client-server, match-making [and] leaderboards."
Sony has not commented on God of War going online at this time, but multiplayer is being worked into more and more titles, as it's a good way to drive recurring incremental revenue and give a title extra legs.

That listing does have a pic of Kratos and does say "Join the God of War team!" but maybe it'll be some other game. God of War III was as good a moment as any for Sony Santa Monica to switch to a new franchise. We'll have to see - all I know is that the traditional structure of God of War does not led itself to multiplayer.
