God of War: Ghost of Sparta to Haunt PSP

Posted May 4, 2010 by M.H. Williams

Sony Computer Entertainment America just announced today via their Playstation Blog that God of War will be seeing a second PSP title. The game, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, will be developed by Ready at Dawn Studios, creators of the first PSP game, Chains of Olympus.   SCEA's Santa Monica Studio will be closely working with Ready At Dawn to bring the game to store shelves.

One of the first tasty new screens from the game...

The game will serve to fill in some of Kratos' backstory.  Taking place directly after God of War, Ghost of Sparta "tells the story of Kratos’ ascension to power as the God of War."  Players will dive into Kratos' dark past in "a journey that will reveal the origins of lost worlds and finally answer long-awaited questions about Kratos’ tattoo, scar, and family."

Eric Levine of SCEA wants players to know that Ghost of Sparta will be "pushing the limits of what PSP can do with state-of-the-art visual technologies, higher resolution environments, and greater depths of scale."  The game will include new features, such as new magic abilties and an updated weapon system.  Levine also says that more updates will be forthcoming as we move closer to E3.

In a press release, Sony added, "Providing over 25% more gameplay, God of War: Ghost of Sparta will feature fluid, life-like characters, a robust weapon system, new magical powers, weapons and navigational abilities, many more enemies on screen, and a greater number of boss encounters, truly bringing the experience to life, all while on the go." The game is set for release later this year, although an exact date was not set.

Ready At Dawn's first foray in PSP God of War, Chains of Olympus, was released in 2008 to rave reviews.  The title became the highest rated PSP title on Metacritic, and sold 340,000 copies within its first month.

So much for Ready at Dawn not working on any more PSP titles. They probably have another project going on in the background, but it's hard to argue with the success they've had on the PSP.

Chains of Olympus really was fantastic, can't wait to play this one.
