The U.K. has loomed large over the gaming landscape of Europe for a long time, both in terms of development studios and sales. While the British development scene is currently struggling for tax credits in order to maintain its viability, the consumer side has fallen behind another major player in the EU.
According to data from Media Control GfK International [thanks GI.biz], Germany now has the top sales of any country in Europe. The statistics company says that sales in the U.K. are down 20 percent for the first half and "the decline [is] mostly due to a lack of new-released blockbuster games in the U.K. in 2009."
Wii Fit is the best selling title in Europe, taking the top spot in the U.K., Germany and Austria and also selling well in Finland, Italy and Sweden.
The great irony of the Germany sales mark is how the country is seriously considering banning mature rated games outright in the region – the Bundestag needs to learn to embrace games, not fear them.
