Gears Designer Says Epic's Looking for a Partner to Complete Shadow Complex 2

Posted September 16, 2011 by James Brightman

Gears of War 3 is about to ship and is getting great reviews (although not all to Cliff Bleszinski's liking) but there's another game in Epic's stable that many fans would love to see another installment in: Shadow Complex from Chair Entertainment. As it turns out, the 'Metroidvania' style Xbox Live title may see a sequel after all.

According to Bleszinski, the next Shadow Complex could still come to market with the right partner. In fact, the game itself is already mostly designed.

"Shadow Complex 2 is sitting there, it's actually largely designed, we just need to find a partner that will help us to finish it so we can bring it to market," Bleszinski said.

Epic and Chair decided to shelve Shadow Complex 2 to focus on creating the iOS title that went on to become Infinity Blade. Considering the growth of the iOS market and how hugely successful Infinity Blade has been, it certainly appeared to be the right move.

Bleszinski noted that Epic also had considered bringing the original Shadow Complex to iOS, but it was decided that a game of that style really would need to be designed as a new product from the ground up for iOS.

"We needed a flagship product for iOS, plain and simple," Bleszinski said. "And we could have portedShadow Complex, but it would have been a lot of work and it might not have been the right fit. And then Donald Mustard suggested Punch Out!! with swords with RPG layers and we were like, 'Yes!'"
