GDC 10: We Shouldn't 'Throw Away Our Entire History' Over Motion Control, says Spector

Posted March 10, 2010 by David Radd

With the PlayStation Move just revealed in full, the hype for motion controllers in 2010 has only just begun. Still, Warren Spector would like to make sure that traditional gameplay methods aren't disregarded, similar to what IndustryGamers argued last year.

"I think it's kind of weird...that we've sort of said, 'We've got 20, 30 years of people learning how to do this -- sitting on their couch and having a good time, and knowing where the buttons are -- and we're saying 'You've got to stand up and wave around and gesture,'" said Spector during a GDC luncheon [thanks Gamasutra]. "We're in the process of throwing away people -- kids, adults -- who know this stuff.”

“Especially from outside the industry, there's a tendency to want to see seismic shifts, to want to see radical change, and we have to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater," he continued. "I don't know if we want to throw away our entire history because we want to use gestural controls. I hope we keep our perspective a little more rational."

He noted that gaming is, because of direct downloads, able to appeal to niche audiences well. "I have a friend who just lives for his hardcore submarine sims -- him and 5,000 other guys," Spector said. "But now there is a way to reach that specific audience. I hope there's still room for the single-player experience. That's still what I love to do."

Spector, who is designing Epic Mickey with motion controls, is aware of the irony with his argument. "By the way, I'm working on a Wii title and I'm loving it," he said.

IndustryGamers was also in attendance at this special "Lunch with Luminaries" put on by David Perry and hosted by Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta, so we will bring you more interesting commentary from the panel in the coming days.

If it really takes off, why would people feel compelled to buy a new console? And thus why would the console manufacturers expend the massive resources needed to develop a new console when their capacity to get return on that investment has been drastically curtailed? driver update scan

Even if the check-ins worked fine, you couldn't determine how many unique users check-in. You could have 1 person check in 50 times in 2 minutes. internet security software

The Playstation 3 gaming audience (as opposed to early adopters who bought it simply as the best Bluray player in the early days) are mostly core gamers in their 20s and 30s. Third parties are trying to appeal to that market.online fax

I hate to admit it, especially since I like Nintendo's franchises more, but Sony arguably has the best first party development studios. Though no slouch in this department, MS puts less emphasis on first party besides Halo and it shows. They are clearly third in this respect, but that doesn't mean they're not still impressive. internet fax ratings

There is one very major functional difference between the Move and the Wiimote outside of the "motion" aspect. This often overlooked element is that the Wiimote gets its screen pointing based on pointing at a part of the screen by moving your wrist. The Move doesn't get "pointed" at the screen, its position is assessed by the camera and that is interpreted onto the screen.free internet fax software

The most ironic part of this whole situation is that third parties will likely take much greater care to use the PS Move in a way that adheres to core gamer sensibilities than the wagglefests they've produced for the Wii. I say this for two reasons:Fragrances for Women

Microsoft has also implemented better support for solid-state drives,[55] including the new TRIM command, and Windows 7 is able to identify a solid-state drive uniquely. Microsoft is planning to support USB 3.0 in a subsequent patch, support not being included in the initial release due to delays in the finalization of the standard.top ecommerce services

There were a lot scarier scenes in "Mirrors" than the one they chose. And they should have picked the scene from the cursed video in "The Ring" where Samara walking backwards is shown in the mirror.Facebook Login

Interesting set of answers, ’specially when laid alongside each other. You both have very different points of view, though I think you nailed most of them better than he; but then again, I always preferred UO to DAOC… top printer ink
