GameStop has repeatedly said that it doesn't think digital distribution will be a threat to its brick-and-mortar business for many more years. At the same time, however, the leading video games retailer has slowly made some efforts to get into the digital space on its own. The GameStop website has been offering digital downloads of certain PC games for some time now, and today GameStop extended its digital business into the casual games space by partnering with RealNetworks on a casual digital store.
“As the leading video game and entertainment software retailer, we continuously look for ways to bring our passion for gaming to the customer visiting us online,” said Tony Bartel, GameStop's executive vice president of merchandising and marketing. “The new Casual Digital Store accomplishes this goal by appealing to an ever-expanding customer demographic looking for value in addition to trusted guidance to ensure they receive the best gaming experience possible.”
GameStop added that its casual customers "will be treated to money-saving offers, free trials and streamlined search and checkout capability." The retailer is kicking off the launch of the casual store with 50% off on "select" titles "for a limited time." Additionally, GameStop is offering a “Casual Lounge,” which will let its customers "connect with GameStop’s experts and make more informed decisions through editorials describing new releases."
As for GameStop's existing PC games digital store, the company added some functionality to enable gamers to pre-order "select" PC game titles. What a novel concept! The first games under the pre-order program include Section 8 (SouthPeak Interactive), Dragon Age (EA/BioWare) and Red Faction Guerrilla (THQ).
