Gamescom Becomes Largest Games Show in the World

Posted August 23, 2010 by Ben Strauss

With more than 500 exhibitors from over 33 countries, gamescom was assuredly on track for momentous growth this year. Numbers from event organizers Koelnmesse have revealed that gamescom saw attendance by over 254,000 attendees, affirming that not only had the show grown, it has become the largest games show in the world.

2009 saw 245,000 attendees, 458 exhibitors and 31 countries present. This year, however, has firmly put gamescom at the top of the list for biggest event of its type in the world. Tokyo Game Show on the other hand saw only 185,030 visitors in 2009, down from 194,288 in 2008.

This is the second year that gamescom has been running, and organizers are incredibly pleased.

“gamescom 2010 surpassed our expectations and provided new momentum for growth. We were especially pleased by the expansion of the international presence: we brought together more international industry representatives in Cologne than ever before, thus anchoring the position of gamescom as the international industry trade fair. We are already looking forward to a successful continuation next year,” said Olaf Wolters, head of Germany trade body, the BIU.

The next gamescom has already been scheduled to take place in Cologne from August 17-21, 2011.
