Game Division at Sony Will Become PlayStation-Only

Posted February 24, 2010 by David Radd

Sony Corporation today announced that it's reorganizing its Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. division on April 1, 2010 at the start of the new business year. In particular, this will create a new division called SNE Platform that will focus on its computers and mobile devices while a spun off SCEI division (still led by Kaz Hirai) will concentrate solely on console hardware and software.

While this move looks to separate Sony's console business from other unrelated businesses on its corporate fiscal sheet, it will apparently not affect day-to-day operations at Sony Computer Entertainment. "This is a rather complicated maneuver involving the legal entity SCEI in Japan,” said a SCEE rep to CVG. “It has no effect on any regional HQ - ie. SCEA, SCEE etc are totally unaffected by this."

So, nothing really changes. Sony will still make PC games (despite the misleading article name), they will just use a new division to do it instead of Sony Computer Entertainment. What about Sony's other game division, Sony Online Entertainment? Are they also stopping with PC games?
