Game Developer Research today unveiled the results for their third annual Game Developer Census. This study showed that the number of game employees in the U.S. was slightly up year-over-year from 44,400 to 44,806. While there have been a large number of layoffs in the industry, Game Developer Research notes that there have been many studio openings that focus on social and online gaming to balance things out.

"We're pleased to be debuting the latest Game Developer Census for North America," said Simon Carless, global brand director of the Think Services Game Group. "The report offers a comprehensive snapshot of the financial health of the industry. For industry watchers, this is an essential document to discover the state of the games business."

The report also found that the number of Canadian gaming employees went up from 9,500 in 2008 to 12,480 in 2009, a nearly 30 percent rise. Hoping to take advantage of Candian tax credits, the year saw expansion of old studios and the establishment of new new ones in cities like Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto.
