Square Enix has announced that it will begin charging a subscription fee for Final Fantasy XIV on January 6, 2012. Square’s second MMO had what could be called a lackluster launch, leading the publisher to keep the game free while it tried to fix it. To alleviate some of the pain, Square has discounted the proposed monthly fee from $12.99 to $9.99.
The subscription fee originally included $3.00 a month for a single character, and varying service periods of 30, 90, and 180 days for $9.99, $8.99, and $7.99 respectively. With the discount, that’s down to $6.99, $5.99, and $4.99 respectively.
Players subscribed to both Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV will receive a discount on their Final Fantasy XI fee, the ability to transfer one character name from XI to XIV, and some in-game shoes. Score!
