The Final Fantasy franchise is fast approaching 100 million sold, and today Square Enix announced the latest milestone for the newest entry, Final Fantasy XIII. Although exclusive to PS3 in Japan, this is the first entry in the series to also make its way simultaneously to the Xbox 360 on this side of the Pacific (FFXI came to 360 years after the PlayStation version). That's no doubt given the title a little extra boost in sales. Square Enix today announced that FFXIII has already sold 1 million units in North America in just five days on the market - that makes it the fastest selling game in the franchise's history (it's also the fastest selling game in the U.K. in 2010 so far).
The commercial success hasn't exactly matched with the critical assessments. Although a Metacritic of 82 is certainly decent, a number of critics just flat-out trashed the RPG. Destructoid called it nothing more than eye candy, Wired labeled the game a "failed experiment," and Edge commented that by taking "brave risks with the series’ foundations...they ultimately create trembling fractures throughout the entire edifice."
Square Enix recently said that they don't listen to the critics too seriously, and director Motomu Toriyama essentially said that reviewers have been looking at the game with a Western bias. Perhaps Square Enix is smart to ignore the negative reactions; after all, the company's shipped over five million copies worldwide and the sales keep piling up, so they're doing something right.

Not quite James. Final Fantasy 11 was also released on the Xbox 360 here in the US.
