Final Fantasy Franchise Could Get Makeover

Posted July 19, 2010 by Ben Strauss

Recent comments uttered by Yoichi Wada suggest that Square Enix might be considering a reboot to the Final Fantasy series. Speaking with Gamasutra, the Square Enix president stated that Final Fantasy XIII was indeed a commercial success, at the cost of alienating new and core gamers, however.

“When it comes to customers’ reaction to the quality of the game, some value it highly and some are not very happy with it,” said Wada. “I think this is a product that was able to meet the expectations for those who know Final Fantasy.”

“There are all kinds of games around in the market today. Should Final Fantasy become a new type of game or should Final Fantasy not become a new type of game? The customers have different opinions. It’s very difficult to determine which way it should go.”

A possible re-boot might be evident in the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV; it'll be interesting to see what direction Square takes with the online game.

"... the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV, which is going to integrate MMO elements into the gameplay mechanics."

Perhaps because ... IT'S AN MMO?!

No. Let the franchise die. Please let it die.

Reboot the franchise? Every game is different from the others, the only common theme is that they are RPGs and have some creatures like Chocobos. With 12 mainline entries and 1 online entry, the numbered games are fine. I won't buy Final Fantasy Online II (I refuse to consider it or the first MMORPG to be part of the FF series) because the basic concept of MMOs are a scam, paying a monthly fee just for the right to play a game you already bought and own.
