At the start of 2010, Mistwalker President Hironobu Sakaguchi promised that he would reveal his next “long-awaited new blockbuster project.” Nintendo revealed today [thanks Kotaku] that the Final Fantasy creator's next project will be on the Wii.
A teaser webpage has been unveiled for an RPG title called The Last Story. While there's precious little detail offered on the site, other than a stylized logo and a music piece that sounds like a violin interpretation of Stairway to Heaven, it does show that it is a collaboration between Mistwalker and Nintendo.
The first piece of art is nice looking, for whatever that's worth.
This announcement comes after Sakaguchi helped produce two large profile RPGs for the Xbox 360 in Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey and later made four DS titles. And while the resemblance between the titles The Last Story and Final Fantasy are obvious, we'll just have to wait and see how much Sakaguchi is trying to replicate his success from the past.

Wii doesn't have the audience for this kind of games. The publishers will be some kind Of dissappointed of the sales after the launch. Final fantasy has its core audience on The PlayStation platform.

And a little bit in XBOX360 I think. After all, XBOX360 is very hardcore and has a big installed base. Similar to PS3.

It's odd to see how Mistwalker has so far given the PS3 a miss. Still, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey were published by Microsoft and The Last Story seems like a Nintendo published title; if that's where the money is you can't blame Mistalker too much for going there.

There's a pretty good chance that The Last Story will end up being a franchise like Blue Dragon, but it all depends on the style of game it is. If it's a traditional JRPG then it will be successful in Japan and fail everywhere else, but if it's an Action RPG then it will fail in Japan and succeed everywhere else. JRPG developers can't win either way. I now I like the traditional JRPG format and hope that The Last Story is one.
