Final Fantasy is one of the preeminent brands in Japan and in the RPG genre overall, but its best days may be behind it. Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada noted recently during a press conference in Tokyo that the problems associated with FFXIV have "greatly damaged" the entire Final Fantasy brand.
Wada noted that for FFXIV, which had performance problems on PC and saw a delay on PS3, Square Enix has been implementing fixes since earlier this year: "We'll continue with our reform work, which basically amounts to fully redoing the game, and hope to revive the FFXIV that should have been released."
As for Square Enix's other popualr RPG franchise, Dragon Quest, Wada responded to a question about the future of the franchise in light of the recent announcement that Dragon Quest X would be a full-fledged subscription MMO for Nintendo’s Wii and Wii U platforms (news that was not received well and caused a stock drop). "We're not making them all online," said Wada of future titles in the DQ series. "We'll continue with a variety of developments, online included."
