Epic and Nvidia Bring DirectX 11 to Unreal Engine

Posted March 2, 2011 by M.H. Williams

Epic Games and Nvidia announced today that both companies would be entering into a partnership to bring new DirectX 11 features to Unreal Engine 3. In addition to DirectX 11 techniques like tessellation, Unreal Engine 3 will have added support for Nvidia technologies like PhysX, Apex, and 3D Vision. The new updates are already available to developers using the current Unreal Development Kit, and Nvidia is showcasing the technology at GDC on its new Geforce 500 series GPUs.

"Thanks to Nvidia's excellent cross-platform physics technologies and DX11 expertise, we have enhanced Unreal Engine 3 to bring unprecedented new levels of realism and demonstrate what the next generation of gaming will be," said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games.

"Unreal Engine 3 continues to amaze us and represents a generational leap in gaming," said Drew Henry, Nvidia's general manager of the GPU division. "With the addition of our PhysX, APEX and 3D Vision technologies, it will deliver unprecedented, high-end visual experiences for gamers. We can't wait to play the games that Unreal Engine 3 will power in the future."
