E3: Zelda: Skyward Sword 'Would Be Done Already' if Nintendo Had Used Twilight Graphics

Posted June 15, 2010 by James Brightman

IndustryGamers had the pleasure of attending a developer roundtable today where a large focus of the discussion was Zelda, both the new Skyward Sword for Wii, and the Ocarina remake for 3DS. Producer Eiji Aonuma noted that Nintendo has wanted accurate motion swordplay in a Zelda game for a long time now, so the addition of Wii MotionPlus to the game has been a welcome one. Shigeru Miyamoto noted that the game's overall gameplay structure was actually more or less complete already a year ago, but the game has been undergoing a major visual overhaul and that's one of the primary reasons it's not coming out until 2011.

Miyamoto added that he's a big fan of impressionism in art, and that the game's new visual style is somewhat inspired by Cezanne. Aonuma ultimately confessed that the entire game would already be done if the team had just decided to reuse the graphics engine from Twilight Princess.

Over the course of 2010, Nintendo will continue to polish the gameplay and visual style. Miyamoto said that there are still a few dungeons to create and some more challenging bosses to implement in the game, but that overall they're also looking to change the typical structure of what we've all come to expect in a Zelda game.

Aonuma also revealed that the Skyward Sword transforms into a being that can guide Link and the Skyward Sword is actually the Master Sword. The basic story as Aonuma described it is that Link was born in a town in the sky called Skyloft, and some incident reveals that there's a whole other land beneath the clouds. This land is naturally ruled by evil forces and Link is of course made to go into this world and has to travel back and forth between Skyloft and the land below. The details are still vague, but fans will no doubt rush to stores to purchase this latest Zelda whenever it ships next year.

Good, I'm glad they aren't re-using the Twilight Princess graphics. Don't get me wrong, they are good graphics, but what they are doing with this is so much better.
