2K Games has officially confirmed that Duke Nukem Forever is not only in development, but will be released within the next year. The announcement comes as PAX 2010 is just getting started. Gearbox Studios is finishing development where 3D Realms left off.
Gearbox and 2K will be showcasing the game at PAX, even offering a public demo to those in attendance at the convention.
After 13 years, and countless jokes, Duke Nukem Forever looked like it would slip away earlier this year with the announcement that 3D Realms shut down. Gearbox Studios president Randy Pitchford tells the Wall Street Journal that his studio took charge of the project in late 2009. He has said that the game is in the “polishing” stages, and that he hopes to deliver the game by 2011.
The report from the WSJ mentioned that Duke Nukem Forever is due out “next year” and is “currently expected to ship in 2010.”

Some may scoff, but it will be good to get this game out, if just so people can move on.
