DreamWorks Looking for New Game Licensing Deal

Posted July 29, 2009 by James Brightman

Activision has been publishing most of the games based on DreamWorks' movie properties, but that could be changing in the near future. Activision's deal with DreamWorks expires next summer and CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said the movie studio is looking to start negotiations on a new game licensing deal; whether or not the new deal (which would take effect in 2011) will be with Activision or another publisher has yet to be determined.

The news comes as DreamWorks reported a 7% drop in profits for the second quarter, as Monsters vs. Aliens failed to perform as well as Kung Fu Panda. DreamWorks did benefit from a recent change in its existing deal with Activision, which brought in another $24 million from extra payments for games based on several previous films, including Monsters vs. Aliens.

DreamWorks also has a one-off deal in place with THQ to make a game based on next fall’s Oobermind.

It's not like Monsters vs. Aliens failed, it has made over $200 million (and is still in theatres).

Right, but it didn't do as well as Kung Fu Panda and DreamWorks needed it to.
