Posted January 5, 2010 by David Radd

Enterbrain [thanks Andriasang] today released the Japanese sales results for the 2009 calendar year, showing that Dragon Quest IX was the most popular title with 4.1 million copies sold with Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver trailing at 3.3 million. New Super Mario Bros. Wii came on strong late in the year to post 2.4 million in sales followed by Friend Collection at 2.3 million and Final Fantasy XIII netting nearly 1.7 million.

On the hardware front, the DS led the way with a combined 4 million sold followed by the PSP with 2.3 million. A surge by the PS3 late in the year put it at 1.7 million, close to the Wii's 1.9 million, while the Xbox 360 languished with little over 330,000 sold.

Software sales were mostly flat compared to last year with a 1.8 percent decrease to 326 billion yen ($3.56 billion), while hardware was down 13.6 percent to 216,490 million yen ($2.36 billion). In total, the market declined 6.9 percent from 2008 to 542,640 million yen ($5.92 billion).
