Doom Creator More Excited About Games Now Than Ever

Posted July 27, 2011 by James Brightman

id's John Carmack is easily one of the brightest minds in the history of gaming, and he's quite content with the current state of the games industry. While some might lament a lack of diversity in gaming genres, Carmack still sees tons of innovation ahead, including from his own company, which continues to work on the next engine, id Tech 6.

"For the foreseeable future, I’m more excited about gaming right now than I have been in really a long time - probably than I have been ever," Carmack enthused to IndustryGamers. "The technology is exciting, we’re doing fabulous things, it’s just great on all sorts of levels. I’m far from burned out or feeling that the genres are tapped out."

Carmack continued by noting the progress he anticipates making as id moves from Rage to a sequel. "I’m very much looking forward to... everything’s pretty much baked in Rage right now. We’ve got several more weeks to polish everything and get feedback in and do our final bits of polishing, but I’m psyched for what we’re going to do in Rage 2, how we’re going to really play up some of the aspects that it turned out weren’t our bread and butter, previously but added to the game. There’s a lot more we can do here that’ll make it fun. I’m looking forward to working on the other id Tech 5 projects. And we’re in research for id Tech 6 graphics, content development…yeah, I’m super busy," he said.

Carmack also continues to keep an eye on the mobile sector and the burgeoning cloud gaming field - two areas that he clearly feels are going to be huge components of the industry in the years ahead.
