DJ Hero Ships 1.2 Million Units, Beats Out Sales Predictions

Posted July 7, 2010 by Ben Strauss

DJ Hero, another one of Activision’s music genre based games, has apparently been doing well enough to garner a possible sequel. Activision’s Dan Amrich offered up some sales figures on the game, saying 1.2 million units have been shipped to retailers since the October 2009 launch.

Though initial sales figures were relatively low at 123K units in the U.S., Bobby Kotick believes that the IP could be successful. “I think DJ Hero is a really innovative product. I can’t wait for you to see next year’s…we’ll stick with it and get it right,” he said.

The low sales figures, staggering $120 price tag and publisher expectations did little to help the game, but through it all, 1.2 million units have been sold, and Activision is going through with a sequel.

“That’s not a flop; that’s the long tail at work,” wrote Dan Amrich on his blog.” DJ Hero was dubbed a flop on its release… but what it needed was time for its audience to find it, a price break, and positive word from both friends and reviews to circulate.”

Activision confirmed the existence of DJ Hero 2 quite a while ago. As a matter of fact it was on display at E3 in a big way when Activision rented out the Staples Center for a night to promote it. I also got to play DJ Hero 2 during my appointment with Activision. :)

Yeah....as a matter of fact it ships in just a few short months. Love seeing the sales figures, but i don't think I had to be told they were going through with a sequel. ;)

The sequel isn't what the story is about - it's just good form to confirm already known details (like a sequel coming) in stories like this. If we didn't add that piece of information, someone would post, "You know, they've already confirmed a sequel in case you weren't aware."
