Disney Acquires UTV

Posted February 1, 2012 by Ben Strauss

Disney has today announced their acquisition of UTV and subsequently UTV Ignition, the publisher behind several mid-range titles that have seen burgeoning success across multiple consoles and social spaces.  The Indian-based publisher has yet to comment on how the company has been affected in the wake of the buyout.

The deal was originally proposed by Disney late last year to the Indian government, reported the BBC.  It would now appear that India’s cabinet has approved the deal bringing Disney even closer to a bigger presence in the rapidly growing market.  UTV represents a major media conglomerate in India, with UTV Ignition representing a small fraction of the total workforce for the company.

While UTV might show promising leads in India for Disney, the Ignition group recently saw one title cancelled, with several layoffs reported to reduce redundancies.
