Diner Dash Developer Sees Layoffs

Posted December 6, 2011 by Ben Strauss

The folks at social developer Playfirst have announced an unspecified number of layoffs within the company.  The news specifically makes note of restructuring plans, without naming total losses.

"Our future plans are to continue to focus on the mobile casual gaming space," said Katie Kihorany, VP of marketing.  "Part of this focus means continually making sure that the organization is structured to allow us to focus on creating those great games. Unfortunately, sometimes that means restructuring, so that we can better achieve this goal," she added.

Playfish enjoys a large player base, with over 550 million downloads for their most popular title, Diner Dash.  Since being founded in 2004, the company has grown to over 100 employees as of last year.   That still has not stopped a bit of poaching from other companies, with several VPs moving to other companies such as Playdom and Zynga.

While mobile titles have been a success for Playfirst, the social realm has proven to be harsh.  Playfirst was forced to cancel their push into Facebook after Diner Dash and Chocolatier proved unable to gain a foothold in the Zynga-dominated social network.
