DC Universe Online Revenues Up 700 Percent After Going Free

Posted November 22, 2011 by M.H. Williams

DC Universe Online went free-to-play earlier this month, besting a villain even DC’s Justice League couldn’t defeat: low subscription numbers.  Since the change though, DCUO’s numbers have been rising at a rate of 6 percent per day, according to Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley.  Smedley took to Twitter to share the good news.

“DCUO's playerbase is growing at 6% a day…” he tweeted. “700% increase in daily revenue (47% PC / 53% PS3).”

More heroes means more fun. Or destruction for civilians.

The shift was also great for bringing lapsed players back into the fold, with “more than 85% of daily log-ins” coming from “returning players.”

It’s good the free-to-play model is giving some lower-performing MMOs a second chance.
