David Jaffe Is Sick Of 'Artsy Fartsy' Games

Posted June 22, 2010 by M.H. Williams

David Jaffe does not make subtle games. He makes games where former soldiers with white skin murder their families and the population of a small country. He makes games where a psychotic clown whose hair is on fire drives a combat ice cream truck. Jaffe does not do deep.

In a conversation over Twitter, a fan told Jaffe that he preferred gameplay to narratives. Jaffe responded that the fan needed to justify that statement, but that Jaffe was sick of “bitches” in the gaming industry that can’t get over their own artistic statements.

"Thanks but I kind of do. Reality is, we work for the gamer and we want them as happy as they can be. We will push as hard as we can to get it perfect for every gamer until the time has simply run out... That said, I agree... SO F*CKING SICK of artsy fartsy in this industry. Get f*cking over yourselves bitches."

Jaffe later defined what he meant by ‘artsy fartsy.’ “Artsy fartsy is NOT artistic anymore than tons of explosions=good action game. LOVE artistic games. HATE artsy fartsy games,” he continued. “ARTY-FARTY= pretentious, dull, surface bullshit without really understanding the craft of game design or emotion/storytelling.”

No names were named, but something must be making Jaffe that angry.

M.H. Williams has been writing in some form or another for ten years and has been a hardcore gamer since the NES first graced American shores.  You can catch him on Twitter as @AutomaticZen, Google+ as himself, or on his personal Facebook page.

Gotta say, I agree with the man completely. What's the name of that studio? Tale of Tales? Pretty much every "game" they've released is a token example of what Jaffe is railing about. The people have absolutely zero talent. "Artsy fartsy" games constitute a growing sub-genre, unfortunately, and it's only bound to get worse.
