Crytek Adds 3D Support to CryEngine 3

Posted September 2, 2010 by M.H. Williams

Crytek wants their name and the Crysis franchise to be synonymous with 3D gaming, and Crysis 2's full 3D support for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 is the first strike in the developer's plan. The next strike was launched today with the release of CryENGINE 3 SDK version 3.2. This new SDK update adds full stereoscopic 3D support to Crytek's engine.

With the CryENGINE 3 Screen Space Re-Projection Stereo solution, developers can have full 3D in their titles without any additional code or asset changes. The Live Create feature, which allows realtime editing across all support platforms, is also fully compatible with 3D. With Live Create, developers can make changes in the CryENGINE sandbox and see all change immediately on the target platform. CryENGINE also outputs HD-resolution 3D movies from the in-engine renderer in realtime.

CryENGINE 3 has support for all industry standard output formats and display tech, including HDMI 1.4, Anaglyphic 3D, and stereoscopic projection.

“In the past year, S-3D has been the most exciting technological development in the world of entertainment. Following the huge success of the movie Avatar, movie theatre companies and TV manufacturers have rushed to support this amazing new way to immerse their audience in their content. Record numbers of people returning to theatres have evidenced the appeal of S-3D for consumers,” said Carl Jones, CryENGINE Director of Global Business Development. “Now TV corporations, console platform owners and game publishers are looking for unique and compelling S-3D content to deliver to their customers. With CryENGINE 3 we offer a solution that is far superior to any other game development solution out there. Developers can easily evaluate the new version of CryENGINE 3 through our mycryengine.com portal.”
