"You know, I didn’t quite gather it. I don’t want to come across as defensive. How do I phrase this properly? When people rated Gears 2 higher than Gears 3, it kind of upset me because I know Gears 3 is a better game on every level,” said Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski.
He comments on the reviews coming out that have been pegging the title at a ‘low’ 8 out of 10. Given that the Metacritic is sitting at a 91 out of 100, with all 44 official reviews rated as positive, Bleszinski feels a little let down by the 8 out of 10 scores delved out by Eurogamer, Destructoid and Escapist.
Most negative criticism has manifested in the idea that there is a lack of ingenuity from the title. Eurogamer specifically notes that pacing within the campaign was “[dulled] at too early a stage.”
Overall though, the decision will be made in the weeks following the game’s release date on September 20 when the consumers will have a chance at the title. With a glowing Metacritic and almost universal adoration from the Xbox crowd, the game is already breaking records.
Bleszinski remains confident of course, noting that “The added development time is one of the things that allowed us to make it like that."
“We’ve embraced Gears 1’s strengths, learned from Gears 2’s weaknesses, and hit a sweet spot between the two. Honestly, I think that’s the gist of it all.”
