2K games has announced that the next installment of Civilization will be released on September 21, 2010 (Sept. 24 in U.K.).  Fans of the game will be pleased to note that Civilization V will be bringing a whole slew of new features to the table.

Sid Meier’s Civilization V reinvigorates the classic turn-based strategy genre with an astonishing new engine built from the ground-up for this flagship edition of the Civilization franchise,” 2K boasted in the announcement.

Besides adding in a new engine, there will be upgrades to the gameplay mechanics that will forge even deeper connections with in-game designs. What should really pop out is the new social feature being introduced. “The new in-game community hub allows Civ fans to share content and compete against each other without leaving the game, marking a new era that will forever change the 'one more turn' addiction of the franchise,” 2K said.

An earlier interview with Sid Meier brought the vision of the “Civilization Network” to light a bit more, and with the new social feature being added to this latest installment, it does appear that the Network is well on the way to realization. Whether or not this game will interact with social gaming audiences has yet to be seen.
