Civilization 5 Lead Designer Leaves Firaxis

Posted December 21, 2010 by Ben Strauss

The lead designer for Civilization 5, Jon Shafer, has resigned from Firaxis. While his time with the company exceeds 5 years, he has been a long time member of the community’s map modding segment. He was a major proponent for uploading and sharing custom maps that have been popular with the latest Civilization title.

Shafer revealed to the Flash of Steel blog that he resigned from the company saying he “very much enjoyed [his] time at Firaxis,” and that he was not let go. As for the reasoning for his departure, there are no specific details at this time.

Firaxis has also confirmed that Shafer left the company, issuing a statement saying, “We are grateful for Jon’s contributions to Firaxis and Civilization franchise and wish him all the best in the future.”

Good riddance. Civ V was a massive disappointment for me, as a hardcore Civ IV fan.
