CCP Cuts Staff, Focuses on EVE Online

Posted October 19, 2011 by Steve Peterson

CCP, the company behind massively multiplayer game EVE Online, announced layoffs today as they refocus their efforts on their leading game. The layoffs, about 20% of their global workforce, are centered around their Atlanta, GA offices and the development efforts on their World of Darkness game.

In their statement, the company said, “As we reexamine our outward relations, we are also taking the time to reevaluate our internal goals. In doing so, we have come to the conclusion that we are attempting too many things for a company our size. Developing EVE expansions, DUST 514 and World of Darkness has stretched our resources too thin.”

CCP has identified their priorities as being the continuation of EVE development and bringing DUST 514 to market on the PS3. “We do this in order to realize our ambitious and challenging plan of joining the two in a cross-platform, truly massive online world.”

Their World of Darkness game will continue development “with a significantly reduced team.” There's no word on how this will affect the release schedule, although it's clear that will be pushed back.

CCP acknowledged some of the problems they had with their user base earlier in the year, but said that the EVE Online user base is up over last, though down from the peak this summer.
