Not two months ago, the Castlevania movie was officially dead and gone in its current form. Being undead, though, is not a disadvantage for the monster slaying franchise, as Bloody Disgusting [thanks Joystiq] announced that the movie has risen from its coffin.
In place of Sylvain White will be James Wan (Saw, Dead Silence, Death Sentence) who will also co-write. Paul W.S. Anderson is still slated to produce the movie.
"I'm very fresh on this project, so its early stages and I'm still trying to work things out, but the producers love my vision for it," said Wan. "I'll be working on the script with a writer to give it a new spin, different to the previous versions. This will have my stamp on it which Konami is very excited about."
"The thing I love about what Konami did with Castlevania, was taking the iconic Dracula mythology and Eastern-European setting, and retelling it with a Japanese pop-cultural sensibility," he continued. "That’s the East-meets-West tone I want to visually expand on for the film. I’m thrilled by the opportunity to make a highly stylized, fantasy, action film that focuses on the gothic storyline and the cool, anime-like characters. For once, the human hero is as sexy and dangerous as the vampire villain, and his weapon of choice was what attracted me to the project in the first place – The Vampire Killer Whip.”
We've got to say, we like Wan as a director for Castlevania - he's got the pedigree to make it a sleek, violent action movie and he demonstrates at least passing knowledge of the gaming franchise, which is always a plus. We'll believe this movie is good when we see it, however.

I'm beginning to think the games press shouldn't report on game movie deals in this manner. Hollywood isn't like videogames - movies have directors attached, or actors attached, or are even put into pre-production, only to eventually be put into permanent holding patterns. Scripts are commissioned by studios that know there's no real chance the final film will be made. Nothing in the movie biz is final until it's final.
