Call of Duty Tops $3 Billion, 55 Million Unit Sales

Following the record breaking launch of Modern Warfare 2, Activision Blizzard has now announced that the entire Call of Duty franchise has surpassed $3 billion in worldwide sales. The company also noted that since the very first game in the franchise, the series has gone on to sell more than 55 million units across the globe. Activision based this data on figures from The NPD Group, Charttrack, GfK and the company's own internal estimates.

"Call Of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, Inc. "If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history."

The Call of Duty franchise is likely to be very lucrative for Activision for a long time to come. The publisher is rumored to be tapping a third studio for the franchise now (in addition to Infinity Ward and Treyarch), and each game will have long legs and continue to generate plenty of additional revenue thanks to a steady stream of DLC.

And to think this franchise was born out of EA's refusal to let the developers have the freedom they desired to make new and interesting gameplay experiences in the war shooter genre(Medal of Honor). I bet they are kicking themselves over this now.
